Professional Liability Insurance

Joining the FSMTA gives you access to reduced rates on professional liability insurance.  Our insurance is available exclusively to FSMTA members.  You must fill out a separate application and pay a separate fee (starting at $99/year) in order to get insurance.  If you are a current member, you may log in to your membership profile to apply for a new insurance policy online or print the insurance application to mail in with your check.  You are welcome to apply for membership and insurance at the same time and can include both applications in the same envelope, but please enclose separate checks for accounting purposes.  Please read the below for more detailed pricing and coverage information.

Please note: you can only apply for a new policy online. To renew an existing policy, please return your renewal invoice by mail or fax.

Program Highlights:
The FSMTA has the most established program for massage insurance in the nation.  The FSMTA program is underwritten through Allied Professionals Insurance Company, a Risk Retention Group, Inc.—the nation’s largest alternative health Risk Retention Group.  Allied’s programs have been serving alternative healthcare since 1986, and all coverage is reinsured through Lloyd’s of London, the world’s oldest and most prestigious insurance underwriter.  Their in-house legal team, comprised of the nation’s leading experts in alternative health malpractice defense, has an unparalleled track record in defending its insureds.  Allied’s experience and track record in alternative health ensures that you will have the kind of support you need should you ever be faced with a claim of unprofessional conduct.

Exclusive Professional and Premises Package:
The FSMTA has negotiated a unique, members-only package policy combining both Professional Liability and Premises Liability into a simple package policy.  This ensures that you are protected for both acts of professional misconduct as well as from a simple slip and fall incident that could occur on your premises.  The pricing is ideal for the massage therapist.  Combined $1,000,000/$1,000,000 basic coverage is only $99, while coverage for the $1,000,000/$3,000,000 basic package is just $115.  You pick the coverage that suits your unique needs.

Customizable Coverage:
In order to extend professional liability coverage to more modalities, our insurance provider (American Massage Council) has created a tiered coverage system. They consider some modalities to be higher risk. Originally, the insurance company simply declined coverage for these modalities. Now, we have a class system in place that both allows for extended coverage and keeps the basic policy cost the same; therefore, only people who are practicing ‘higher risk’ modalities have to pay a higher premium.  Click here for an summary of the modality classes.  If you find that you need to apply for extended coverage, please use the printable forms below to do so.

National Coverage-Free Occurrences Conversion:
The American Massage Council uses an approved claims-made Master Policy for providing coverage.  Each massage therapist receives their own individual limits of coverage for a full twelve months.  By utilizing a Master Policy issued through a federally chartered Risk Purchasing Group, you receive national coverage, protecting you anywhere you go within the United States (subject only to licensure laws).  Your policy also includes a unique claims feature.  At the end of five years, coverage automatically becomes permanent (called occurrences).  This means you are covered even if a claim is made against you years after you retire from practice.  This feature is free.  And should you need to access this feature sooner than five years, an affordable schedule is available for early conversion.

Limited Exclusions:
It is important that you review your policy for exclusions.  Generally, coverage is intended to reach to the scope of a typical massage practice.  However, there is one exception—if you practice colonics, we are unable to offer you any insurance coverage.  As always, you are not covered if you are acting outside your scope of practice and, as with most carriers, claims of sexual misconduct are not treated as covered professional claims.  For details, review the Massage Professional Coverage Endorsement, Section V, Exclusions.

Additional Insured Information:
An additional insured can be any establishment where you work, or property that you rent.  Many landlords and employers prefer you add their property to your policy to protect them in the event of an accident.  To add an additional insured to your policy, it costs $25 for each of the first 2 businesses, any others are FREE!  Simply call the central office at 877-376-8248 to request the needed form.
